Faiths of Erôth

In the world of Aurôrum, religious identity is often aligned with ideological pantheons known as 'Ideopans' rather than specific patron deities.

STANDING: FAITHS OF ERÔTH

In the world of Aurôrum, religious identity is often aligned with ideological pantheons known as ‘Ideopans’ rather than specific patron deities. These Ideopans consist of multiple deities sharing at least one core alignment, making it equally common to find temples dedicated to individual deities as it is to entire Ideopans. While the faithful generally venerate the whole Ideopan, personal reverence may shift frequently, reflecting changes in seasons or fortune. Consequently, followers of the same Ideopan typically view each other as part of a unified faith, with only the most doctrinally strict individuals, such as Inquisitors or Paladins, drawing clear distinctions.

Intertwining Deities

A unique aspect of Erôth’s religious landscape is that the same deity can belong to multiple Ideopans, reflecting a common aspect of their divine nature rather than their entirety. For instance, Lady Eravil Dark Eyes (LE), Winifred Orenda (LN), and ‘The Martyr’ (LG) are all part of the Ideopan ‘Divine Resolution’ due to their shared focus on the safety and security of their followers and loved ones.

Diverse Combinations

This intertwining of deities creates an incredible number of combinations. Some Ideopans boast large followings across the continent, while others are limited to small, obscure villages. One of the most remarkable outcomes of these diverse combinations is the bond formed among the faithful, fostering unity and collaboration toward common goals. However, there are also instances where followers of a particular deity view their association with another deity as blasphemous. Such believers may take action to sever these ties, purging what they see as heretical influences from their faith.

Conflicts Between Ideopans

While many Ideopans coexist peacefully, conflicts can arise, particularly in diverse communities where multiple Ideopans are represented. Small villages may have a few different Ideopans, whereas cities can host dozens or even hundreds. These conflicts often stem from differing interpretations of a deity’s nature or from the perceived corruption of divine principles. For example, a village dedicated to the Ideopan ‘Divine Resolution’ might clash with another devoted to ‘Fierce Liberty,’ especially if they perceive the other’s practices as undermining their values of safety and security.

Race and Religion

In Erôth, religious affiliations typically transcend racial boundaries. However, certain races may claim specific deities as their own, influencing how these gods are depicted and worshiped. For instance, Vroga Waruk, a god of battle, chaos, and liberation, is depicted differently by humans and orcs. Humans see him as a powerful, battle-scarred warrior, while orcs envision ‘Vroga’ as an attractive, smooth orc, effortlessly wielding his weapons. These contrasting depictions reflect profound cultural differences and occasionally lead to disputes over the true nature of the deity.

Unique Faiths

There are exceptions to the general religious norms in Erôth. Terran, whose existence is often doubted, worship their own gods but adhere to a tradition of secrecy, never speaking of their deities to non-terran. Similarly, the enigmatic Lopers, who arrived less than one hundred and fifty years ago, likely have their own gods, though their beliefs remain a mystery to others.

Gods of Aurôrum

In the world of Aurôrum, there is a distinct difference between the Ethereal Gods and the Astral Gods, each playing unique roles and inhabiting different planes of existence.

Astral Gods

  • Planar Domain: Outer Planes
  • Alignment Influence: Strongly tied to specific alignments such as good, evil, law, or chaos.
  • Interaction with Mortals: The Astral Gods rarely send their loyal agents to guide and influence mortals. Direct interaction is so rare legends of it very well may be fabrications.
  • Soul Handling: The Outer Planes gather souls based on their alignment via the River Styx. Truly virtuous souls may be claimed by Astral Gods and transformed into plane-specific beings. For evil planes, souls may be tortured before becoming planar material.
  • Role: They are more abstract, representing alignment-driven concepts and often influencing mortals through their agents and divine principles.

Ethereal Gods

  • Planar Domain: Inner Planes
  • Alignment Influence: Less alignment-driven, more focused on natural and elemental forces.
  • Interaction with Mortals: Ethereal Gods are deeply involved in the affairs of mortals and interact more directly with the Material Plane.
  • Soul Handling: Souls are collected by the Soular Winds and brought to the Inner Planes, where they are ground down to planar material over 200 years. Remarkable souls become elementals and merge with the plane. However, truly virtuous souls may be claimed by Outer Planes denizens.
  • Role: They are revered for their direct interaction with the material world and often act as patrons of various natural and elemental phenomena.
