The Wyrd Twins, Miranda and Kharos, are the dual deities of luck and fortune in Aurôrum. Created as a byproduct of the first act of free will, they represent the delicate balance between good and bad luck, disorder, and the unpredictability of life. Miranda, the goddess of good luck, and Kharos, the god of bad luck, are inseparable: two sides of the same coin, with one always influencing the other. Their divine presence ensures that fortune, whether fortunate or grim, is never far behind. Together, they are the first instance of chaos in the world, their existence woven into the fabric of chance and choice.

History

The Wyrd Twins came into existence when the first being exercised free will, creating disorder in the universe. They are the embodiment of this disruption, manifesting as the primal force that governs luck, both good and ill. Miranda, a radiant figure of compassion and hope, brings blessings, while her twin Kharos, cloaked in shadow and misfortune, represents the darker side of fate. Together, they guide the fortunes of mortals, shaping their paths through the unpredictable ebb and flow of fortune.

Their creation marked the very first moment of chance and chaos. In fact, it was their creation that inevitably lead to the creation of the Inevitables. Despite what other gods, such as Lady Eravil, think, they are integral to the natural order of the multiverse. It should also be noted that despite their chaotic alignments, the Wyrd Twins are not enemies but partners in a cosmic dance, each balancing the other’s influence. They have watched over mortals for eons, playing their roles as arbiters of fate, while neither deliberately harms nor helps without reason. They simply exist, serving as forces that both mortals and gods must contend with.

Dogma

Luck is not earned but given, and fate is both a gift and a curse. The Wyrd Twins teach that life is unpredictable, and one must be prepared for both fortune and misfortune. Embrace the ebb and flow of luck, for it is ever-changing and uncontrollable. Miranda encourages hope and optimism, while Kharos instills a sense of caution and resilience in the face of adversity. Together, they remind their followers that chaos governs all things, and only those who understand the duality of luck can navigate life’s uncertainties.

Tenets of Faith

• Take Chances: Those who shy away from chance will never grow. The Wyrd Twins bless the bold, for fortune favors the brave.

Rituals and Practices

• Leave it to Chance: A simple ritual where followers flip a coin to make a decision, big or small. This is seen as consulting the Wyrd Twins, asking for guidance in a decision.
• Fateful Games: Games of chance, particularly dice or cards, are considered sacred. Temples often host gambling as a form of worship, where followers ask for favor from Miranda or Kharos.
• Offerings of Luck: On the twin gods’ feast days, followers offer personal tokens that symbolize luck, such as a favorite trinket or a memento from a moment of fortune. These are burned or buried to appease both Miranda and Kharos.
• Fast or Feast Festival: A bi-annual celebration where a grand coin flip is held to determine whether the festival will be a day of feasting and celebration (heads) or a day of fasting and somber reflection (tails).

Consequences of Transgression

Cheating: It’s one thing to test your luck, another to steal it from the twins. The faithful will see you pay for your heresy.

Worshipers

Followers of the Wyrd Twins range from gamblers, adventurers, and warriors to merchants and rulers who understand the fickleness of fortune. While Miranda’s followers tend to be more hopeful, optimistic, and focused on charitable deeds, Kharos’s worshipers are often pragmatic, ruthless, or hardened by life’s misfortunes. Nonetheless, both groups understand the need to honor both twins, as neither good nor bad luck is permanent. Adventurers and risk-takers, in particular, revere the twins, seeing their influence in every outcome, both great and small.

Orders and Sects

The Twin’s Gambit

A guild of gamblers and risk-takers who believe that every roll of the dice or turn of the card is a way of communing with the Wyrd Twins. They seek to push their luck to the extremes, confident that Miranda or Kharos will smile upon them. They often use their winnings to fund charitable endeavors, believing that sharing their fortune shifts the balance of fate.

The Lucky Blade

A mercenary group that offers protection services, believing that the Wyrd Twins guide their weapons. They defend the weak but are also known for taking risky jobs, confident that either Miranda or Kharos will favor them.

The Wyrdweavers

A secretive order of what others would call heretical cultists who believe they influence the twins’ favor. They often serve as advisers, making important decisions that influence significant outcomes, all in the name of the Wyrd Twins.

Campaign Updates

Their names have worn down into ordinary speech. The twins are twinkling your way is what a person says to another who has had a piece of luck, and it is said by people who could not tell you which twin does the twinkling. Miranda’s name in particular gets used on its own, as a measure of good fortune or of a pleasant face, without any devotional weight behind it at all.

No temple to either twin has been found in Idir.
