Tanjun

A tongue of the Draconic family, kept by the Karruk and the clans of Kijinxi

STANDING: DRACONIC · THE KARRUK AND THE BARREN LANDS

Tanjun is the tongue of the Barren Lands: of the Karruk, of the clans of Kijinxi, and of the orcs of the east generally. It is harsh and graceful at once, and it carries as many tonal pitchings as it has sounds. It is written as well as spoken, in a logographic script, and it belongs to the Draconic family.

The orcs made it themselves, and they did not begin from nothing. The lizardfolk native to the Barren Lands before them had a language of their own; the orcs took the language, and then they took the lizardfolk, who are extinct and were eaten. What was left of that speech was worked over afterwards with pieces gathered from elsewhere until it was a tongue in its own right.

Yara swears in it. Woken by cold and pain in the mountains, she cursed in a language nobody with her knew, and it was placed afterwards as Tanjun. She is Hafuwë, and she trained among the Barren Lands orders; whether that is where she came by the tongue was never written down.
