Saltmarch

The unclaimed ground where Taziondale, Eldamar and the Vala meet: no crown reaches it

STANDING: OUTSIDE IDIR · UNCLAIMED GROUND, WHERE THREE REALMS MEET

Saltmarch is the ground where three realms run out. Taziondale’s open downs end here, Eldamar’s Elden forest begins here, and the salt mountains of the Vala come down to meet them both. The name is the salt’s, and it was given by mapmakers rather than by anyone who lives on it: three peoples touch this ground and none of them agree what to call it. The Hafuwë name it for the edge of their own forest; the Free Folk do not name it as a border at all, having no use for a line nobody enforces. Saltmarch is the surveyors’ word, and the surveyors are from Peredhel.

No authority reaches the place. Each of the three borders is drawn to it and none is drawn across it, so the ground inside belongs to whichever of them is asked (which is to say, to none). The Free Folk range it freely for that reason, and Koa Attila was born on it.

Erôth has one other name for land no crown holds, and the older tongue was blunter about it: Idir is ancient Mól for no crown. Whether the surveyors heard the echo when they wrote Saltmarch on the plate was never written down.
