In Aurorum, the journey of souls is governed by two distinct paths: the River Styx and the Soular Winds. The River Styx serves as a mystical conduit to the Outer Planes, carrying souls through its dark waters to destinations aligned with their deeds and nature. This ancient and ominous river is shrouded in legends of perilous crossings and the transformation of souls into eternal planar material or planar beings.

The Soular Winds work otherwise. They gently sweep ordinary souls to the Inner Planes, where they begin a gradual process of integration with the elemental and polar energies of their destined realm. Over centuries, these souls become intrinsic parts of their respective planes.

Souls carried by the River Styx face trials and transformations that reflect their moral essence and actions in life, potentially ascending or descending through the hierarchies of the Outer Planes. In contrast, those guided by the Soular Winds embark on a quieter journey, merging peacefully with the elemental essence of the Inner Planes over time.

The Journey of Souls

• Ordinary Souls: Most souls, unremarkable in their lives, are transported to the Inner Planes. There, they slowly disintegrate into planar material over about 200 years, becoming part of the plane itself.
• Remarkable Souls: Souls of those who left a significant mark on the world become elementals upon reaching the Inner Planes. The size of the elemental depends on the size of their impact. These elementals gradually diminish over millennia until they, too, merge completely with the plane.
• Virtuous Souls: Souls with strong convictions or virtuous lives are sometimes claimed by the denizens of the Outer Planes. These souls may rest in harmony or serve the plane they align with, potentially rising in rank and power.
• Evil and Chaotic Souls: Souls destined for the darker Outer Planes undergo torture and corruption, transforming into perfect planar material. Some willingly embrace this fate, gaining immediate rebirth as denizens of their ‘chosen’ plane.

The Cycle of Life and Death

In Aurorum, the interplay between the Inner and Outer Planes defines the fate of souls. Most souls meet a humble end within the Inner Planes. The truly remarkable or virtuous find new purpose, either as elementals or as honored servants of the Outer Planes.
