A gnome of Ustos and a bard by trade, who went and asked, and then wrote it down
A gnome out of Ustos, and a bard for a long while before he was a compiler of anything. He says the two are one trade run backwards: a bard finds out which parts of a story an audience wants, and a compiler finds out which parts were there before there was an audience.
He travels, and he buys the drink first. He asks the same question of four people and keeps what survives all four askings, which is why he so often ends by noting that the accounts do not agree. He will not write down a thing he has heard only once. He has walked a week out of his way for a second telling, and thought the week well spent.
He is old, and gnomes are long-lived to begin with, so nobody has troubled to work out how old. He sets these things down some while after they happened. How long after, he has never said. Only that it is after.
