Everyone the company has met, filed not by trade or town but by where each of them stands with the party, from inner circle to hostile.
The company kept no roster. What it kept was a running reckoning of who could be called on, who would take the coin and give nothing back, and who would put a knife in given the chance, and that reckoning is what orders the names here.
Five degrees cover everyone. Inner circle is the small number the three rely on and who rely on them in turn, by choice and more than once. Ally is those who have helped materially, or whose interests run alongside, without being of that circle. Neutral is the quietest of the five: shopkeepers, clerks, guardsmen, ferrymen, the world the company moves through. Unfriendly obstructs, distrusts or opposes without wanting blood. Hostile has already gone for blood, or would.
Two things about a reckoning of that kind matter. The first is that it belongs to the company, and the company can be wrong. A man counted an ally while he works quietly against them is counted where the company counted him, because that is what was believed and acted on at the time. The second is that it stands as of now rather than as of the night the man first walked in. People change sides, and the count changes with them.
Death does not change it. Torgun Kurvroc died an ally and is one still, because where a man stood is a fact that outlives him.
Where a person comes from and what they do for a living are set down beside the stance rather than in place of it, so a councilwoman of Haudh-Gwenn is still a councilwoman of Haudh-Gwenn.
