Idiran naming custom

Up-region Idir keeps no family names; a person is called for the ground they come from

STANDING: CUSTOMS · IDIR

The folk of up-region Idir carry no set family name. A person is named, and then placed: the second half of what you call them is the ground they came from, not the people they came from.

A name travels differently for it. Two strangers carrying the same one are not kin; they are neighbors, or were. It also makes a name useless for tracing a line backward, which in a region where a great many people would rather not be traced is unlikely to be pure accident. Whether the custom was ever meant that way was never written down.
