Mól open vessels / awakening

Mól objects made to be beings in their own right, and the piece of a person it takes to wake one

STANDING: CRAFTS · WORKING · MÓL · OPEN VESSELS

Mól magic could be impressed into an object: a thing made, and a working set into it afterward. Some objects were made the other way. Those were left open, and an open vessel is closer to a being in its own right than to a tool waiting for a hand.

Waking one takes two things. There has to be a spark between the vessel and the person, and the person has to be willing. Then they give a portion of themselves over, and that portion lives in the thing from then on. It does not come back. What follows is not a haunting and not a possession: the vessel enhances whoever carries it, and gives in the same measure it was given. Nancáro put it plainly when he saw the fear forming on the other side of the conversation, calling it no kind of curse and at worst a symbiote. It cannot be done to anyone against their will.

The price is real and it is paid out of the giver, who is less afterward than they were, and who in time becomes more.

The worked example is the Mól calipers. Koa found them and carried them and never once used them, and the spark was his. He handed them and the chance to Hinta instead, and she took it. Awake, they showed her the flaws in a thing beyond what any eye should be able to find, and finding the flaw is what made the Wraithblade breakable at all.

AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECORD

“Don't think of this as being some sort of a curse. At best it's more of a symbiote.”
