The Peren War is Peredhel against Amulta, and it has run some thirty-five years.
Three things stand behind it. The Sempergel, the wall of ice raised between two lakes so that no further ground could be taken by anyone. The Gish, the Amultan warrior-order whose name began as a Peren insult and was taken up as a badge. And the Escarian trade, which was cut and has not resumed.
It has never been a war fought continuously. It flares and subsides, episodic, under a trade pressure that does not let up, and each time it settles back against the wall. The stalemate at the Sempergel is the war’s ordinary condition, not a pause in it.
Leon Yaegar fought it, and Peredhel calls him a hero of it. He is the nearest thing the company has to a witness. Everything else that reaches Idir about this war has crossed a border to get here, and arrives in the shape the crossing gave it.
