Chantry of Purification

They began as a party of Chantry of Tranquility healers sent out to treat Beltran’s army after the gnoll fighting, because the order treats whoever needs treating and puts its own quarrels aside to do it. They dressed burns, scars, broken bones and lost limbs, and while they worked they listened, and what was said to them in the field turned them. They did not come home. They left with a great deal of the order’s supplies and went over to Orsugo.

The name is their own, and so is the leader they took, who goes by the title of the Burning Duchess and whom nobody has laid eyes on. Their doctrine, as Baku recited it from memory and warned she might be reciting loosely, is that there is no healing without fire, and that without great pain to burn out the filth the corruption will only fester.

One healer heard the same words and would not have them. What was said about Orsugo, what he was and what he fought for, did not persuade that one, who walked home and reported it, and everything the order learned of the Purification came back with them. They did not survive it. Asked how they had died, Baku asked Mikhail in return whether he was fond of his robes, and how hard he supposed robes were to get off once they were alight. She burned the body afterward, which is the custom. Where the rest of them had gone she could say only that they were with Orsugo and were not in Haudh-Gwenn. Rumor in the town had Orsugo and Beltran working the same side of the board; Baku did not believe it, and took the two of them for separate evils working separately. No member of the Purification has been met since.
