Crestborne family

One of the oldest families in Loshev and the finest tailors in it, in steep decline, and being undercut and slandered by the family that once owned their ancestors

STANDING: HOUSE · LOSHEV TAILORS

One of the oldest families in Loshev, and tailor merchants: fine cloth and finer garments, made by people in their employ and well enough regarded that a load of them travels west as a sample of what Loshev can do. Their only real competitors have always been the Kurvrocs, and the two houses have been at each other’s throats for generations. The reason is older than the trade. When the Kurvrocs were at the height of what they were under the Mól, they owned the Crestborne ancestors.

The house is in decline now and the cause is not obscure. Kurvroc undercuts their sales, and has kept at it long enough to take the business apart piece by piece.

Evelyn Crestborne holds the name by blood and heads the family. She is Peren, six feet, venerable, greyed black hair and green eyes, and has aged gracefully into it; she is religious, solemn, and mourns the collapse of her house openly, and is respected in the town regardless of what has happened to the money. She goes about in the fine formal black that mourning widows wear, with her husband alive.

Nassar Crestborne was born Nassar Rayes and took the name in marriage. He is Hobbin, a little over five feet, calm and measured, sharp and steady in judgment, and known on the council for both. What he does at home is support his wife quietly through the losing of her family’s position. They hold two of the council’s seats between them.

Campaign Updates

When the slaving ring in the region was pulled apart and its people freed, Torgun Kurvroc went looking for a use for it and found one. He put it about Loshev that the Crestbornes are tied by family to one of the Ten Lashes, the dead turncoat Zahir, and the rumor did what it was sent to do. They lost contracts over it and came close to being run out of the town altogether. Leon Yaegar, who spent an evening with the pair of them and brought the news back, would not say whether there was truth in the connection or none, on the grounds that pressing for the detail would have been impertinent; elsewhere it is held to be a fabrication. Either way the injury falls on Evelyn and not on Nassar, because the name under attack is hers by birth and his only by marriage.

Leon took up one of the contracts they had lost and undertook to fulfill it himself, and ordered some four hundred gold of Crestborne garments besides, to carry west to Draazstone as samples. He rates the work highly and expects it to be well received there.

The company has since used the quarrel rather than settled it. It was the Crestborne business that finally got them through Kurvroc’s door, on Nathan Fox’s advice that the old man’s grudge was the way in, and the Crestborne seats were counted among the votes expected to fall their way on the Draazstone trade. Kurvroc, by another councilor’s account, tends to disagree with almost anything a Crestborne says.
