Mól clergy
The one body in the Empire that was not a clan: a religious order drawn from all of them, and the accuser of the clan that ruled
The Empire was organized into clans and the clergy was not one. It stood outside that structure entirely, a religious order that took its priests out of every clan and belonged to none of them, and it set itself against Clan Saytar, which ruled.
The quarrel was over souls. A soul is meant to join the inner planes at death and not before, and Saytar’s laboratories hurried the passage anyway. The clergy called that blasphemy, and the argument they made against it is set out with the clan that heard it.
They were late to it. The experiments had run for generations by the time the clergy learned of them, and it was only near the very end of the Empire that the work was uncovered and the account of it passed between groups. The great division between the clergy and the ruling clan dates from the finding rather than from the deed.
Nothing else of the order survives. No name it went by came down, and no priest, rite, shrine or house of it was ever found. The objection outlasted it, written in an old Mól dialect unlike the others Mikhail had read and far older than the fall, and the order that made the objection came out of two volumes of Telvanius’s Encyclopædia seven centuries after there was anybody left to ask.
