Beltran's linked ring
A plain band of platinum or electrum, cut in the Mól manner, whose magic reaches away from it toward a ring nobody has found
A plain band, unornamented, of a pale metal nobody who handled it could name. Platinum or electrum, and telling those two apart wants a metallurgist. What it did plainly resemble were the Mól rings the party had handled before, which is most of why it was set aside as valuable a full day before anybody knew what it was for.
Under the last bottle of Amultan Eyes Ashanti had left, it came up moderate abjuration, and it came up wrong. The aura was incomplete. Part of the magic bled off the band and away from it, reaching out and feeling for something a long way off, and a fainter trace of that far-off thing hung about the ring in return. The two were tied to one another.
There are two rings and they work as a pair. Put one on and you may link yourself in body to whoever wears the other, wherever that person is, and distance does not enter into it: an ocean and a continent between the two changes nothing. The link is not passive. One of the pair has to initiate it, and the one who does offers up their own vitality to hold the other together, shielding them from harm and taking back a share of every wound they take.
Quoted in ordinary coin it comes to something near fifty thousand gold, which makes it far and away the most valuable object the party has ever carried.
Beltran had it on his hand in the street outside the burning Color Stay and it did not save him. Either nobody turned it on, or he was killed too fast for anyone to try. Who wears the twin was never discovered, and nobody has pulled on it.
