Kutā
A tongue of the Sylvan family, given to the gnolls and the Triaxians, and written after all
Kutā belongs to the Sylvan family. The survey of the tongues of Erôth gives two peoples for it, the Triaxians of the Barren Lands forests and the gnolls of the warm north, and it records the language as spoken and nothing more. In the mountains the gnoll tongue was only ever their own language, and the survey is where it got a name at all.
The survey is wrong about the writing. Over the Valley of Doom the gnolls set their message out in burning characters, and Koa, who has no Kutā at all, could read the shapes of it — because the Sylvan family is one alphabet under two tongues, and his own Bhaasha is the other. Knowing the characters is not knowing the language, and he did not come away with the whole of what was said. But the letters were there to be known.
