Grinch

A hired archer taken alive out of the ambush on the Westwood road

STANDING: UNFRIENDLY · AMBUSHER ON THE WESTWOOD ROAD

One of three archers who lay in wait on the road out of Westwood, sixteen miles along it, for the Valiant Few riding toward the ruins. Whent, lately of the Haudh-Gwenn guard, had paid the crew about two gold apiece and put a new longbow and new boots in their hands. What he gave them was a description of who to shoot rather than a name, so Grinch did not know whose road he had been sat over until he was told afterward.

The shooting gave him away. A longbow is not a thing anybody picks up, and a crew who could all use one had been trained to it somewhere, as huntsmen or as archers. He said he had never done this kind of work before, and the read on him was that he was telling the truth. He had a family.

One of the three died in the trees and two were taken alive. Aldo saw that both were kept breathing, on the reasoning that an archer who could still talk was worth having; Grinch was the one who could sit a horse afterward. The party settled on blindfolding him and holding him at The Crack rather than killing him or handing him back to Haudh-Gwenn.
