The bird-handler Beltran Grayeras hired to move his messages, and the reason every ambush knew where the company would be
Joey moved into the region not long before any of this started, with a great many trained birds, squab and falcons and others besides, and one thing led to another until Beltran Grayeras was paying him to carry messages. That is the whole of what he was hired to do, and it was enough.
The company met the effect of him a long time before they met the name. Archers taken alive on the road south told them that word of their approach had come to Whent through a bird-handler in Haudh-Gwenn, which meant somebody in Loshev had watched them leave and somebody in the city had been told about it within the day. They could not follow it any further without an agent in Loshev, and they did not have one. Whent gave up the name later, under questioning, along with the fact that it was Joey who had reported the party out of town.
He was taken in Loshev in the end, by Constable Tariq al-Mahir, and he had been working alone. What he had been doing there was waiting for the company to arrive and writing about the town in the meantime, reports that were barely coded and were addressed to people who were never identified. One of them said a storm was brewing. He was still in the Loshev cells when the party left it.
