Sarro Rashid

Sarro Rashid is Peren, a councilman of Haudh-Gwenn, and he ran its bank before any Grayeras did. He ran it fairly. The city’s close trade with Peredhel, which the current council still lives off, was built out of that bank on his watch, and what it cost him was that he became the voice of reason in a room that did not want one. He made enemies at the rate that implies. He was ousted, and the council handed the bank to Beltran Grayeras.

He did not give it up willingly. Some months before anyone connected the two things, a bugbear crew under Daric took the household that ran the bank out of Haudh-Gwenn at night, bound and gagged, on a wagon, and handed the wagon to somebody else on the road. Daric could not say who took it on or where it went, and he was not comfortable saying any of it. The accounts do not agree on who was actually on that wagon. Daric was answering a question about the family who ran the bank and spoke throughout of them, which reads as the household; the version the company carried away and repeated afterwards has the councilman himself bound and loaded with the rest. The question was never put to anybody in a position to settle it. A second company was paid through a broker to make the same people disappear for good, and did not kill them, which is the one detail every account holds in common: they were put somewhere, not put in the ground.

That is what made him cede the bank. Where the bank went after him is its own knot, and the accounts of that do not fit together at all.

He is alive, he still sits on the council, and years afterward it was Naevora Grayeras who gave Mikhail the whole of his history at a gala in Johanka Materai’s house. She also remarked, going down the stairs, that Sarro had been conspicuously absent from it. The company had already noticed, and had noticed too that Tazrih was not there. They went that same night to look at Tazrih’s house.
