Yullen Gemsmith

A friendly, sociable Peren who enjoys life and meeting new people, elegant with his words and a diligent worker besides. He is an old man with a delightful smile, blond hair and soft green eyes, and he dresses in very formal Peren nobility attire.

Yullen was a Metta-Hina of a noble family from Vala, and made a name for himself anyway as a great craftsman of jewelry. When he lost his Metta-Hina status he moved to Loshev to start a new family, so that his children would not have to suffer the struggles of being a Metta-Hina. He restarted his jewelry shop there and eventually got into the city’s local politics, and it was his old contacts back in his home region that set up a trade route between Zatichsk and Loshev.

Appearance

Yullen is an older Peren man who appears every bit the genteel noble he once was. His neatly styled blond hair, now streaked with silver, frames a kind face softened by years of smiling. His soft green eyes carry a constant sparkle, and his fashion sense is impeccable, favoring layered robes with subtle gemstone embroidery, gold trim, and high collars reminiscent of Vala’s noble courts. He wears a ring of his own crafting on each hand, each set with stones symbolic of moments in his life. Despite his age, he moves with grace, and his presence is always calming in the room.

Personality

Yullen is charming, expressive, and deeply empathetic. He disarms others with his warmth and humor, but beneath the genial exterior lies a mind like a jeweler’s loupe: focused, discerning, and exacting. He’s a mediator at heart, often the first to propose compromise during heated council sessions. He believes in progress, tradition, and the dignity of labor. He has a personal dislike of cruelty and manipulative politics but knows how to maneuver through them when needed.

He is particularly protective of artisans and small merchants, often using his wealth and influence to create apprenticeships and fund trade education in the Bronze District.

Current Role

Yullen serves as one of Loshev’s longest-standing councilors, representing both the artisan class and the Silver Pier merchants who appreciate refinement and diplomacy. He is instrumental in managing and expanding trade relationships, especially the one he personally helped establish with Zatichsk. His jewelry shop, though semi-retired, remains one of the most prestigious in the region, now run primarily by his children and apprentices. On the council, Yullen is a crucial swing voice, calming tensions and guiding consensus.

Campaign Updates

His son Cleven was taken, and it was Yullen who hired Mikhail to find him: privately, out of his own purse, in the break between council sittings, because there was no case anyone could prove. What followed was the hunt that broke the Ten Lashes. He has since learned who was paying for them: Beltran Grayeras, named openly at a council meeting, which he heard sitting down.

Between those two things he did the smaller kindnesses a man in his position can do. He opened a tailor and an apothecary on a rest-day when the shops were shut and the party needed both, and he apologized to Aldo, unprompted and at some length, for the quest he had press-ganged him into.

The Muharib raid reached his house. He was injured, and they took particular gems and a set of stone-cleaving blueprints rather than sweeping the place; their leader had been asking after Cleven by name.

The same visit turned up something he did not know about his own household. Mikhail went upstairs to look in on Maearla, Yullen’s serving-woman and rather more than that, who had been unwell, and worked out that she was not ill but about a month short of showing. She was mortified, swore him to silence, and asked him to find her a discreet lady doctor; Yullen was not to hear it from him. Mikhail agreed, told Koa and Aldo more or less immediately, found the doctor, and spent the rest of the day being quietly congratulated by a town that had drawn its own conclusion about whose child it was.
