The Run of Play

Every night of play in the order it happened, three prologues and six seasons, each page holding only what was known when that night ended.

The campaign started three separate times before it started once. Mikhail Kethrel walked north out of Peredhel into Idir to finish a thesis and was robbed of nearly everything on the way. Aldo woke in Ravenhold with no memory of the night and another man’s relics in his coat. Koa Attila took an escort job west out of Ridh and did not bring everyone home. Three evenings, one character each, and no party in any of them.

The first season opened in Loshev on a bounty for five bandits in the woods east of town, and the nights have run in an unbroken line from there through six seasons. Each season that has finished stands under a summary of its own, set at the head of the nights it covers and reading them as one argument rather than a run of separate errands. The sixth is still being played and has none yet.

The order matters because nothing in it reaches backward. A night’s page holds what was known when that night ended, and no more. A name the party learned three sessions later does not appear early, a plan is written as it stood before anyone knew it would fail, and a person suspected in the spring is still only suspected there. What the campaign has since settled sits in the entries for the people and the places.
