Stoneborn

A Stoneborn stands around seven feet, is gray and granite-like to look at, and carries patterns of gemstone across the face like tattoos. They are altered humans. They are born to human parents, and the alteration is not something they inherit from any stone-blooded line, though that is the first explanation anybody offers and it has stuck for want of a better. What was done to them, and who did it, was never written down.

The thing that marks them out is not the skin. It is that they hear whispers in worked stone, and specifically in stone the Mól worked, which is scattered under a good deal of Erôth in ruins nobody has opened. A Stoneborn walking a road can be told there is danger ahead by the ground itself, and will generally go and look.

They are not the Terrane. Both are gray and both are stone-folk in the loose way people mean it, and the Terrane are a race in their own right with their own tongue and their own history under the mountains, while the Stoneborn are human stock that something happened to.

Campaign Updates

Kithul is the only Stoneborn anybody has named. His skin and the emerald patterning round his eyes made his family’s life in their village difficult, and he left young to spare them it. He has spent the years since walking, alone, going wherever the Whispers say the danger is. That is how the company met him: in the Mól ruins outside Loshev, standing in the dark, following what the stone told him. He has been looking for the sense of his own making the whole time and has not found it.

The Whispers were a curiosity when he first mentioned them. They are worth a great deal more now that the party knows what Mól stone tends to be laid over.
