Amultan marriage law

An Amultan wedding, properly held and with the full oaths spoken, hands over a name. The title goes with the name, the estate goes with the title, and the duties the crown is owed by the holder of either go with both. A spouse does not marry into an Amultan house so much as take it on, obligations included.

Those obligations sit heavier than they used to. Amulta has been at war for decades, and what the crown asks of its nobles has tightened over the course of it, so what the oaths transfer now is a good deal more binding than the same oaths transferred a generation ago.

The law is also the only door the company has found into Velmont’s research. Her father’s work is held personally by High Lady Arcium — her private study or her estate, one or the other, and no underling and no university — and she will not give it up. Copying it out may not be an option either: old Amultan magic can bind a document to a single physical copy that cannot be transcribed, and whether this work is one of those has never been established. What the research can still do is pass with the estate, and the estate passes with the name. Gwenivere exiled herself years ago with money out of the family holdings and never formally rescinded either her name or her titles, so both remain hers to give. Her own proposal is to take the work, finish it, and send it back finished. Nothing about it has been decided.
