The five triggers of the Haudh-Gwenn curse
The keep under Haudh-Gwenn has fired five times, and four of those were rescue attempts
The curse under Haudh-Gwenn is Clan Saytar’s, and it has fired five times. The first was the fall itself, when the city standing over the keep went into the ooze. The other four came afterward, and every one of them was a party that had come to break the Idiran curses and failed at it, working the whole time under the Elder’s own guidance.
Three of the four lost it on timing, which is the part of the working that allows no slack: the keeps have to fall within seconds or minutes of one another, or the curses reset. The fourth had the timing and lost it another way. They split themselves across separate keeps, and one of their number went to the sword instead.
None of that was offered. Aldo pulled it out of him by naming the evasion to his face, and the Elder’s answer to being caught at it was that woe be to the man that crosses you.
The last of the four was a few centuries ago, and the country has not stood still since. Idir is more populous now and far more closely knit than it was then, so a fifth firing would have taken more lives than any of the four before it.
“Woe be to the man that crosses you.”
