Spell-monger
A word for a mage of the Arcane Congress that means one thing inside the Congress and another everywhere else
A spell-monger is a mage of the Arcane Congress. The Congress uses the word of its own members, plainly and without heat; a credentialed member is properly a congressman or congresswoman.
Everyone else means something by it. Said outside the Congress it is an insult, and the insult is traced back to the name of a demon, Dion. How a demon came to be attached to licensed mages was never written down, and nothing else about Dion was either. The party first heard the word used that way in a Haudh-Gwenn bar, from a barkeep required to measure every bottle before and after each shift and speaking about the men who audit them (S1E08). Even the man who supplied the etymology that night hedged it.
