Koa's restored Mól bastard sword

A found Mól blade with an oversized hilt, brought back from rust by Hinta, and promised to a man who died before it reached him

STANDING: ARMS · BASTARD SWORD · MÓL, RESTORED

A straight-bladed bastard sword of Mól make, cut for a hand a good deal larger than Koa’s: the hilt is oversized in the way bugbear gear is oversized, and bugbears are goblin-kin, kin in turn to hobgoblins. Bastard swords are reckoned a Peredhel national weapon. The party pulled it out of a hidden cave in the Valley of Doom, with a dagger and a spearhead beside it, and brought all three to Hinta to be cleaned and authenticated. It reached her rusted, and spent a season soaking in her foul sulfurous crystal vat among mixed-metal rods.

Before it was finished, Aldo promised it away. Torgun Kurvroc had not asked for it. The party needed the Mól-obsessed councilman to fund the Twisted Grove expedition and to sponsor moving the Forven prisoners to Loshev, and Mól flattery was the only lever they had on him. Flattered into a good mood, Kurvroc was pledged the restored Mól blade for his mantle and given a copper and a gold Mól coin with it, and let slip in return that his line were muharib. Hinta was still working on the thing when she learned it had been promised away, and took the news with barely-contained rage.

She handed it back to Koa clean. Every trace of rust gone, the detailing inside the fittings put right, the blade sound. What she could not do was make it new: the etched design has worn down over the centuries it was carried, the edges of it rounded off, and a sword already forged cannot be brought back to heat, so she laid in again what the tools to hand allowed. It is socketed, and the electrum discs take to it, which left Koa two swords they fit rather than one, and he cannot swing both at once.

Kurvroc never took delivery of it. He died while the party were away north at the keeps, and the funeral was over before they reached Loshev again; the council read the will itself, that being too small a city for solicitors. Half of what he had left to people could not be handed over, the objects having been carried off by raiders, so hobgoblins who had come days on the road from Draazstone stood through the whole reading for nothing. Hinta got a few Mól pieces out of it, and she got the restored blade, outright, from the man it had been promised to.
