The Free Folk's Host / the Idiric Hetmanate

The Free Folk organized as one body: a council government of tents and plains, under a Hetman whose title is for life and can be taken back

STANDING: GOVERNMENT · THE FREE FOLK, IDIR

The Free Folk are a people before they are anything else, but organized as one body they are the Free Folk’s Host, or the Idiric Hetmanate, and that body has a government. It is a democratic one, run by council. It keeps no seat and no hall: the Host is wherever the tents stand, which is somewhere out on the plains of Idir.

Its head is the Hetman, and the Hetman is Izha Krumm, a half-orc woman. The title is for life and revocable in the same breath. Usually it passes on when the holder grows old, and where it does not, the community can rescind it in favor of a new one. There were no nobles among the Free Folk to inherit anything, so from the first they chose their own leaders, mostly for combat prowess and for the ability to lead, at times instead for knowledge and ingenuity. What the office does from day to day is mostly representative: it settles minor disputes and carries the ordinary business of the Host. In military affairs the Hetman is the de-facto commander.

Two standing bodies sit beneath the title, and between them they hold what the Hetman does not. The Council of Many Voices is the whole community summoned, and it takes the major decisions and elects the Hetman. The Elders and Crones council is seven of the oldest and wisest, and it speaks the law and judges by it.

Campaign Updates

They have never turned out as a body. Koa Attila’s reckoning, after the band that happened to be in Loshev the night the fires went up stayed to fight them, was that the Free Folk are not an army but are closer to being able to raise one than any town in Idir is on its own. Nothing has been done with the thought.
